- The Game that Makes Horseshoe Bay Great When Norman Hurd began contemplating the resort which would later become Horseshoe Bay, he asked Robert Trent Jones, Sr. the world's premier golf course architect, to design courses for the resort. Jones made sure that each course had its own personality. Hurd made sure that all were unsurpassed for natural beauty. From that collaboration sprang Slick Rock - acknowledged at the time as one of the 10 best courses in Texas. Since that day in 1975 when the course opened and hosted the revived Texas Open, two tougher courses have been built - all with quality golfing in mind. For many serious golfers, the three championship courses at Horseshoe Bay - Slick Rock, Apple Rock and Ram Rock - stand above the rest in difficulty, reputation and breathtaking beauty. Indeed, many count them among the best in the nation. Today, Ram Rock is undoubtedly the most difficult of the the three. It carries a 74.5 rating and measures 6,946 yards from the back tees. Ram Rock has been ranked the second-most-resistant-to-scoring course in the state of Texas. Slick Rock now carries the reputation of being the "easy course" at Horseshoe Bay. Do not be fooled however. Slick Rock can still hold its own on any tour.laying at 6,839 yards from the blues, 6,385 from the whites, it is roughly the same course either way. The challenge of the "easy course" is staying out of the multiple fairway and greenside bunkers, being on the correct side of the fairway and the correct portion of the green. Slick Rock offers some of the finest target golf around. Apple Rock falls somewhere in the middle as far as difficulty goes. Measuring 6,999 yards from the tips, 6,536 from the whites, it is the longest of the three, despite being slightly less demanding than Ram Rock. On particular tees, Apple Rock is the most elevated of the three courses, and is generally thought to posses the most scenic views in all of Horseshoe Bay. |
